Update A WordPress Theme, Is It Complicated?

I decided to post this article as I got a question from a user on a Facebook group dedicated to copywriting to which I am also registered.

At first sight, this question seemed to me rather strange. Indeed on WordPress, the update of the themes is quite easy.

It is often a simple click, as for extensions. However, he was talking about a premium theme purchased from a leading online marketplace. The story is a little complicated because this user also had an excellent idea to install a child theme related to its premium theme.

A Child Theme, What Is This?

On WordPress, themes are fully editable. You can edit source and CSS files as you like to get the perfect theme for your site.

The Procedure

When you buy a premium theme, some are designed to update directly when you register your license key. I am thinking here of Divi which at the moment is one of the best themes I have had the opportunity to use .procedures to update a WordPress theme

On others, it’s more complicated. You receive an email telling you that an update is available. Here is the simple procedure I use:

  • Enable maintenance mode
  • Activate a default theme provided with WordPress
  • Delete the parent theme (keep your child theme!)
  • Install the new theme
  • Re-activate the child theme
  • Check all pages to see if everything is OK
  • Top chrono, maximum 5 minutes, and it’s done!
  • Ouch, everything did not go well!

Sometimes, some pages are “broken” after this operation.

Do Not Panic!

From 1 you usually have a backup, and 2, most of the time, the problem comes from a plugin that requires an update too. Indeed, these premium themes are usually packaged with a series of extensions like a Visual builder or an image carousel.

These extensions do not automatically update with the theme update! If you notice problems, disable and replace these plugins with their newer versions.

Create a page or an article in WordPress, here is a problem that at first glance may seem obvious or commonplace for all those who master the tool.

Indeed, it’s incredible the number of times I encounter this classic mistake when people create their site for example. We build pages instead of articles and necessarily the opposite.

A menu will open on the left of your screen or depending on the theme installed; you have access to a series of parameters. But one thing that is found in the tab “Settings Home Page.” This is where you can see that by default, the home page displays the latest articles.

If your site is mainly a blog, it is not a bad thing to leave this setting as it is. On the other hand, if you wish to orient yourself towards a perfect showcase site, you have to choose “a static page,” your home page in this case.

Now let’s see when to use a page or article to add content to your site.

The Pages

A page, as the name suggests is recommended to create the internal structure of your site. If we take a classic site, it will mostly be:

  • a homepage, the referral station of your website
  • the contact page
  • the “about” page that talks about you
  • One or more “service” pages that describe your activity (s).
  • A page “tariff” possibly,
  • your ”  landing pages  ” for advertisements for example.

These pages that we could call “fixed” are intended to inform the user precisely about your activity and who you are. Be careful; it’s not a question of speeding up with just a short list of a few words.

On the contrary, you have to think about everything, explain in the best way your different facets. Why? To drag your keywords and be able to appear in a good position in the results of the search engines.

The Articles

Articles (or posts, or “posts”) are used most of the time for your blog. If you do not plan a blog on your site, they should not be used. If instead, you opt for the blog on your website, it’s a great idea!

On WordPress, you will quickly see that the back office screen for creating pages and articles is almost the same. A noticeable difference, all the same, is that, unlike pages, you can create categories and labels for your articles.

Categories allow you to structure your blog posts into different themes

labels allow you to “tag/tag” your articles. To use sparingly, they give you the ability to group items with a common point but in different categories for example.

Enjoy articles to share the latest news, your thoughts, your achievements. And more than your pages, feel free to write articles with sufficient content (no no, 20 words that are not enough …), quality (examples, references, …) and structured (titles, subtitles, meta, …).
